Child Safety Seat Checks
Child safety seat general guidelines and related information:
Rear Facing Car Seats:
- Children must remain rear facing until they are at least 1 year old AND 20 pounds.
- The harness straps should be at or below the child's shoulders.
- The harness straps should be snug; no more than one finger should fit between the harness and the child's shoulder.
- The retainer clip should be at the armpit level.
- The seat should not move more than one inch from side to side or front to back.
- This is the safest position for a young child, and parents are encouraged to leave their children rear facing until the child reaches the rear facing weight and height restrictions for the particular seat the child is using.
Forward Facing Car Seats:
- Harness straps should be at or above the child's shoulders.
- The harness straps should be snug; no more than one finger should fit between the harness and the child's shoulder.
- The retainer clip should be at the armpit level.
- The seat should not move more than one inch from side to side or front to back.
Booster Seats:
- Indiana Law requires all children under the age of 8 to be restrained in a child safety seat or booster seat.
- Booster seats must be used with a Lap and Shoulder belt, and should NEVER be used with a lap belt only.
- A booster seat should be used until the child is over 4'9” AND 80 pounds, even if the child is 8 years old or older.
General guidelines and recommendations for all car seats:
- Car seats should be replaced 6 years after the date of manufacture.
- Car seats should be replaced if they have been involved in a crash.
- Parents should check the recall list to ensure that the child seat has not been recalled.
- All child seats should be inspected by a certified technician to ensure that the seat is being used correctly and installed properly.
